One man comes to mindwhen the words "funk" and "fun" are connected with a jazzmusician: Les McCann. The man from Kentucky, self-taught and a true heavyweighton the delicate piano stool, dedicated his whole life on the road to performingfunk. He was highly successful — whether playing with his trio or with EddieHarris, as a pianist or as a singer, in a club or on a big stage — and healways succeeded in captivating his audience.

On But Not Really, the first of seven LPs on the LimelightLabel, he plays in a trio with Victor Gaskin on the bass and Paul Humphrey ondrums. The three musicians were carefully guided by their producer, Jack Tracy, and the liner notes describes their close collaboration. "A LittleThree-Four" is highly recommended listening, as "is Yours Is My HeartAlone," which fans of Lehars operettas will enjoy singing along to while otherswill appreciate the fantastic improvisations in this popular piece which LessMcCann performs less showily than Oscar Peterson in his version but with morehumor and emotion.

This album offers piano trio jazz that is free fromintellectual encumbrance. It is jazz for the soul. Recorded in December 1964,the LP is now available once again after almost 50 years with the originaloutstanding and lavish cover artwork!

ALOS THE SPEAKER CORNER PRESSING -Les McCann &Eddie Harris Swiss Movement 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE LIMITED EDITION LP

TAS Rated 5/5 Music, 4/5 Sonics in the April 2019 Issue ofThe Absolute Sound!

High Quality Pure Analogue 180g Virgin Vinyl LP!

AAA Recording!

Les McCann had already been playing his way through theclubs and record studios on the US west coast for ten years when his appearanceon June 21, 1969 at the relatively new and jazz-soaked festival in Montreux onLake Geneva changed all that. There, he celebrated his greatest musicalsuccess, his number one hit. Half ironically, but proudly in later concerts, when the piano stool could hardly bear him due to his size and weight, hestressed that "Swiss Movement" had supported him, his wife, childrenand grandchildren.

"Compared To What" is a catchy melody that isheard on the radio, again and again, all around the world, today, tomorrow andthe day after It is unmistakable, stillgroovy, full of soul, humorous, stirring. And "Cold Duck Time" is noway inferior: Eddie Harris blows for all he is worth. Everyone can hear thatBenny Bailey was challenged by the unknown themes, but this maestro stillmanaged to capture the audiences ear and attention.

"Swiss Movement" is, and will remain forever, ahighlight among all the jazz LPs that have been recorded live and it shouldn’t be missing from any collectors shelf. Along with BennyGoodman’s Carnegie Hall Concert from 1938,Charlie Parker & Co.’s Massey Hall concert from 1953,and Ella Fitzgerald’s Berlin concert from 1960 and very few others.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analoguecomponents only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head.

LASTLY WE HAVE LES MACCANN LTD. & LOU RAWLS STORMY MONDAY LIMITED EDITION LP

-THEYVEadded 3previously unreleased recordings: Blues Is A Woman, A Little Les Of LousBlues, and an alternative version of Stormy Monday - to the original LP!

Carefully remastered by Master & Servant and pressed on180-gram vinyl.

When Lou Rawls (1933-2006) entered the recording studio inLA in February 1962 to record his first album, Stormy Monday incollaboration with Les McCanns combo, hardly anyone could have guessed whatsuccess and popularity the black singer, songwriter, producer and film actorwould achieve in the coming decades. In 1966 he made his breakthrough with LoveIs A Hurtin Thing and reached the top of the R&B charts.

Four years earlier the situation was different. Rawls hadgrown up in the south side of Chicago, got in touch with gospel music early, met Curtis Mayfield and replaced Sam Cooke in the Highway QCs a few yearslater. At eighteen, he moved to the West Coast, released his first recordings, and created a masterpiece along with jazz pianist Les McCann, a prototype ofthe cool jazz/blues melange so characteristic for the L.A. music scene.

The silky deep baritone voice carries the reinterpretationsof such famous blues classics as (They Call It) Stormy Monday, See See SeeRider, Im Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town or In The Evening When The SunGoes Down. Lou Rawls just possesses that voice!

But besides the song selection and Lou Rawls goose-bumpproducing voice, the small combo of Les McCann - also known as Ltd. - must becredited for the incredibly coherent production. Part of the recordings weremade during a night session, which must be regarded as one of the gentlest andmost relaxed recording sessions in history. With Stormy Monday Rawls andMcCann turn away from the then popular Neo-Gospel or Soul-Jazz. Theirwonderful arrangements are reminiscent of the great R&B of the early 50s.The result: pure electricity! In other words: one of the most beautiful coolJazz/Blues albums of its time!
