Signature B on page 1 appears below "some" in the last line.

A biting satire on John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, by Charles Churchill.

Churchill wrote this attack as Montagu was a bitter enemy of Churchills close friend and ally, John Wilkes, champion of liberty of the press. Montagu has lead the successful prosecution of Wilkes for obscene libel.

Wilkes and Churchill became friends in 1761 or 1762, and over the following few years before Churchills death, he published many works in defence of Wilkes.


CONDITION

Rebound in a cloth binding, with renewed endpapers. Externally, smart, with a couple of light marks to the cloth. Minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots.
