1. Identification: Spondylus spinosus (Schreibers, 1793), near Al Wajh, Saudi Arabia, on offshore reefs 20miles south on debris near calcareous rocks in 6m depth, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: I confess it will beeasy forthe eye of a dedicated naturalist to fall in love with this shell at first glance! But then, nature is beautiful in all its details, even if it does not appeal to our general aesthetic ideals! A unique shell which is undoubtedly rare to find under the acheter Red Sea conditions which do not favour slow growing shells: they all suffer extensively from attack of all sort of boring worms and other creatures doing extensive damage to these shells. That one was lucky enough by being covered completely with marine growth which provided some sort of protection. On the other hand, a diver looking for shells will not easily find such a shell even if carefully shifting debris by hand as it simply looks like a pebble! And in fact, this shell was completely invisible even for the experienced diver. It was eventually being located by night dive because this is the time when these large oyster shells open their valves thus making visible the iridescent patches of rainbow color on their body. An interesting piece and my only specimen to represent this local population, of extreme beauty and very rare intense coral red color. For the dedicated specialist.
